HUNTING EDITORIAL

By Cody Sapp

Hunting and fishing are two of the most favorite things in Oregon. There are many people in Oregon that love to hunt and fish. I love to mostly hunt, but I like to do a lot of fishing also.

Hunting  available in Oregon is black tail, mule deer, antelope, elk, bear, cougar, bird, rabbit, and turkey. My favorite season is black tail because I live right in the middle of a black tail unit and can hunt in my fields. The bucks that I have gotten are a 3-point black tail, and a forked horn mule deer.

I only do rifle hunting because it is effective and kills. Bow hunting only wounds the deer and is not always effective. Hunting is fun, but it sucks when the bucks are wounded and have arrows sticking out of them because the bucks just go off and die in the middle of the forest. Guns are always faster than bows because they shoot with the power of an explosion behind them, but bows have to depend on how strong the hunter is.

My favorite thing about hunting is when I kill one because its exciting when you get a rush of adrenaline after the shot. My least favorite part is gutting it because if you made a gut shot, it does not smell good. The hardest part is packing it out because if you are out in the middle of nowhere on foot its going to take a while. The easiest part would probably be skinning it because all you have to do is cut all the skin off.

Hunting is important to many people, and more people should get into it because it is fun, an inexpensive way to put meat in the freezer, and is a great way to stay healthy. Hunting is very fun and a great for doing on the weekends. I love hunting and will never stop.

She has never gone back to Tae Kwan Do since. Every now and then Hannah and her sister spar for fun. They both went to ATA academy in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Zak Savoi

Zak Savoi is an 8th grader at LMS and he recently adopted a dog from the pound. Some benefits of adopting from the pound are multiple choices of breeds and you are giving a pet a home.

Zak adopted a male one year old brown chihuahua in October, getting it from the pound as a birthday present. Zak was happy about getting a dog because he was wanting another dog since they got their other dog.He picked this dog because it was a brown boy chihuahua and because hes wanted a chihuahua since he was very young. The only thing bad about the dog is that its not house trained yet so he goes to the bathroom in the house so he has to house train him. He takes him outside a lot

After all the fun things about owning a dog he says playing with him is the most fun. Overall though picking up the poop is the worst. He takes him outside a lot. When he's not home the chihuahua plays with their other dog. Overall Zak likes his new dog

HOW I LIVE NOW

How I Live Now
By Melissa Spicer

This book is about a fifteen year old girl named Elizabeth but no one ever calls her that every one always calls her Daisy because she hates the name Elizabeth. She lives with her aunt Penn and her four cousins. Her four cousins are named Edmond and Isaac, who are twins but they look nothing alike, Osbert, who is always talking about being a spy, and last but not least is Piper. Piper is a nine year old girl who is very happy about Daisy coming to live with them.

Daisy was sent to England to live with her Aunt Penn and her cousins because her father did not have very much money and Daisy needed an education. After a few weeks of being in England, England was attacked by an unnamed enemy. Aunt Penn's job takes her away for extended periods of time so the kids are pretty much on there own during the war. Because of the war everything fails such as the power. The kids survived in the cellar because they had extra food and they had each other.

Daisy had a good life living with her cousins and her aunt. She got an education and got to have some kids in the house to hang out with.

I would recommend this book because it is a very good book. My favorite part of this book was when the kids first found out that there was a war happening because you could really see how scared the kids were. So if you like exciting books check out HOW I LIVE NOWin the Lincoln Middle School library!

7th Grade Volleyball

Carly Sand
By: Faith Latta, Kyrin Swanson, and Mason Holweg

Carly Sand is a 7th grade volleyball player at LMS, she has been playing since 1st-2nd grade. She started playing because her mom was a coach and her sister played on the volleyball team. Her team has won 3 games this season and her last game was intense, a lot of ties came between the two teams but in the end the other took victory.

The thing that gets the team motivated is the urge to play. Its not hard, yet at times its not easy to work with the team. Carly reports the hardest part is trying to work with the attitude of her teammates, but by the end of the day she realizes she has a lot of fun playing volleyball.

I'm with Nika Whitney an 8th grade volleyball player, I asked her some questions about volleyball.

Nika reports that their are 13 players on her team and that they practice a half an hour to 2 hours everyday. She also said that her team has won one game this season, Oct. 5. They won this game with the help of her at middle front and the coaching of  Mrs. Shiply.

Her jersey # is 12. She was also telling me how every thing about  volleyball is fun. If  you want to see some good volleyball come to the gym on Tuesday and Thursday right after school.

WARRIORS THE SERIES

WARRIORS
By Darren Garner

The Warriors is a series of books about cats that live in the wild. In Warriors there are four clans in the forest: Thunder; Shadow; Wind; River; and Star clans (star clan is the warrior's ancestors). At one point in time the cats were not united. Before the formation of the four clans cats fought each other. The clans had not had true peace, there had always been some sort of conflict

One night four groups of rouges agreed to meet in peace but, a fight broke out and a lot of cats died. Four of the surviving cats were told by the ancestors, ghosts of slain cats, to choose a leader or die. From that: Thunder, Shadow, Wind and River clans were born. The ghosts of slain cats became Star Clan. The leaders of the four new clans were each given nine lives, their own territories, and a clan to lead.

The warrior code is 15 rules that the warriors live by. If they do not fallow the code they are loners or rouges. Not all loners are enemy's of the clans, some are friends and a few were in the clans at one point.

The series overall is entertaining because it has mystery, romance, sadness, and happiness in this story. What I mean is that there is a lot of drama and emotion in the books.

7th grade football

Kory Parent
By Mason Holweg

Seventh grade football began before school started. When we started practice we did not get our pads because we had to see if we were eligible for them. There are about 25 guys playing, and we have 5 or 6 coaches. We practice for about 2 hours Monday-Thursday.

Kory Parent shared his football experience with me. Kory has been playing football for 6 years, he started playing football in 2nd grade. His position is quarterback and he has 247 passing yards. The last time he made a touchdown was last week. He has only fumbled the ball one time in his hole time playing football. Kory wants to have a career in football.

Please note that you can click on the sections on the right hand menu to go directly to articles relating to a specific topic (like a section of the newspaper), newer articles will be in the top and older ones at the bottom.

The first rounds of interviews and articles were in class practice with writing questions, interviewing and creating a coherent article out of the gathered information. We hope you enjoy our work!

Interveiw with a parapalegic

Ryan Sprague
By James Wynne

You may have noticed an LMS student that is always in a wheelchair, his name is Ryan Sprague.
On July 25, 2005 Ryan and a few family members were in their car going to get some drinks and Ryan had a vision that a truck would hit them, but he kept it to himself, however that is exactly what happened. A truck hit them going about 25-40 mph. Some people in the car were hurt really bad, but Ryan blacked out and when he awoke he could not use his legs, he blacked out again. When he woke up again he was in a ambulance.

When I was speaking to Ryan I asked him about his friend situation, he told me he thinks people are only his friends because they pity him, because he's in a wheelchair. In my opinion Ryan is a really funny guy and has a great personality, I would hang out with him any day.

8th Grade Football

Lincoln Middle School’s 8th grade football team has about 25 players, all with different skills. The team's record is:

·        Two wins
·        Two losses
·        One tie

The coaches of the Lincoln Tigers are Coach Chambers and Coach Bartram. The team started practicing in the summer.

Derek Carlton said that the team was doing well, but needed to work on tackling. Derek thought that the reason they lost one of their games is because they did not make good tackles. Derek’s favorite thing about playing football is that he gets to hit people. Their last game was a win against Winston.

Is Moving Fun or not

Is Moving Fun or Not?
By Andrew Axberg

When I was first told that our family was moving I felt really excited and nervous at the same time. I felt excited and nervous because it was a  new change. Where would I live? What would the new school be like? What about friends?

One thing I noticed about in Oregon is no sales tax. The tax in Crescent City was when something was $2.00
it would be $2.17.  Oregon's sales tax is when something is $24.99 that's the final price.

Another change would be school. At my old school, Castle Rock Charter, I had a choice to go to school. Monday-Friday. I went to the Language Arts lab, and on Tuesday I went to the Science lab from 1:00-3:00  When I first came to LMS I felt lost and nervous because I wasn't used to so many kids I didn't know.

So far I'm adjusting fine. I've made a few friends and am getting used to having a longer school day and more classes. Changing from class to class is pretty fun, because I did not get to do that at my old school.
So far I'm I liking Cottage Grove and Lincoln Middle School, plus I'm looking forward to playing basketball.

Miss Jackson

Miss Jackson
By: Rodney Chamberlain and Bryce Brown

Miss Jackson has been a teacher for 23 years since 1988. Miss Jackson started teaching wanting to be a librarian but instead got a job as a English teacher, but this year she got to substitute as a librarian until December.

Some of the good books Miss Jackson has read lately are Earthing by Clinton Ober which tells much about how you can go outside barefoot in grass and walk around and it will help you heal. Another great book she read is called Born to Run by Christopher McDougall which tells many great examples of how humans are born to be able to run great distances (hundreds of miles at a time). We can even outrun animals such as horses and antelopes. Many of her favorite books are So Far From the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Kawashima Watkins and The Hiding Spot by Corrie ten Book, and her favorite authors are Yoko Kawashime Watkins and Corrite ten Boom. Miss Jackson's favorite books are Non-Fiction and usually reads during summer vacation.

Miss Jackson's favorite stories take place back in World War II in no specific setting but in the period of World War II. Miss Jackson likes to read for enjoyment, to get information, and to improve herself. She prefers to read slowly to savor the book like a "good dessert."  When she has to she can read a book quickly but there is rarely ever a need for that.

Art

Art by Jerika Turner
By Jessica Lynnette Gordon, Ryan Vroman, and Darren Garner

A little known fact about Mrs.Turner is that both of her daughters are artists. We are doing an interview with Mrs. Turner about her daughter, Jerika Turner, who was in college. Jerika attended college for three and a half years at The Academy of Art in San Fransisco, because it is widely known around the world for it's demanding art curriculum.

Jerika, now twenty one years old, has been drawing since four. She allows herself to be inspired and to inspire herself and others around. She gets inspired by different things, for instance someone's pet died and she was so inspired she drew a picture of the owner's pet. Currently, she has art block, which in fact is not a class but a thing where you have no inspiration.

She makes a living selling her art. Right now she has some art for sale. If you want to check out some cool art you can find Jerika's work in Cottage Grove Museum. She has to spend at least twenty hours on a piece of art.

Hannah Arnold's Poetry

Hannah Arnold's Poetry
By Lilly Burleson

Did you know that right here in your own school one of your peers wrote a piece of poetry that got published? How cool is that! Eighth grader, Hannah Arnold got a poem she wrote called "Snowman" in a book. We've all wrote poetry before, maybe because we got bored or our teacher made us. Whatever the reason, it can be difficult sometimes. To be good enough to get it published into a book Hannah must be pretty talented! Especially since she's only been writing it for a year.

Hannah mostly just writes poetry when she's bored, kind of like a fun hobby that gives you something to do for a while. When her piece got published she was twelve, so it really wasn't that long ago. She enjoys writing poetry and is considering entering a scary story contest. That would just be great if she won! Even though Hanna isn't planning on making poetry almost like a job in the future, it will always probably be something she she loves to do.

The Awsome Ben White

Ben White
By Melissa Spicer and Christie Cook

Mr.White went to college at the University of Oregon. He has been teaching at Lincoln Middle School for about five years now and he loves it. Mr.White likes sixth graders because he is still taller than most of them. He is 33 years young and every one of his students are his favorites.

Mr. White is super cool and funny, almost all of the kids that are in his class think he is amazing. He is funny because he always has funny story's to tell. Mr. White did so many fun projects with us. One of my favorite projects that we did was in science, the whole class got to put an egg in vinigar and other things like food coloring and then they turnd all see through, and later we got to throw it at a tree.

Mr. White's favorite hobbies include reading fun books, pumping iron at the gym, and cooking especially on his BBQ. Speaking about BBQ, his favorite food is BBQ ribs. In his words the sloppier the better.
Mr.White has one dog, a Pomeranian named Fritz. Fritz is really small and fluffy. Mr.white got fritz about four years ago. He was so small when Mr.White got him that he could fit in one hand. Mr.White brings Fritz to school sometimes and all of the kids enjoy playing with Fritz, including me but he is really shy around a big group of people.
